Holston Unit

The East Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center-Holston Unit, acquired in 1975, is located at the headwaters of the Tennessee River, approximately eight miles from the Agriculture Campus. This 425 acre tract is utilized to provide land, equipment, cattle and support for faculty, staff and graduate students to conduct agricultural-related research, with a primary emphasis on beef cattle, wheat breeding, weed management, as well as switchgrass and other crop production.

The ETREC-Holston Unit has cattle for teaching and research, averaging 60 cow/calf pairs a year. Currently, this unit has more than 120 acres devoted to row crop and timber research focusing on pest control strategies, crop breeding and environmental sustainability.

The Holston Unit is one of several sites for experiential learning associated with the Center’s Live and Learn Internship Program for undergraduate students, as well as many 4-H youth development events (such as livestock judging and land judging contests).
